The first Journal

The first dental news in Brazil , the Arte Dentária (Dental Art), was published by João Borges Diniz in 1869. Around that time, many Brazilian dentists go to the United States to pursue their studies due to the technical and scientific evolution recorded in that country. The first of all was Carlos Alonso Hastings, who, after returning to Brazil, made changes in the Weber-Ferry engine, later known as Hastings engine.

In the late 1870s, the teaching of Dentistry acquired more drive. The edict 7.247, clause 24, of April 19 th , 1879, established that with each school of Medicine there should be an attached school of pharmacy, an obstetrics and gynecology course and a dental surgery course. The creation of a Dentistry course was closer and closer.

In 1881, with the edict 8.024, of March 12 th , it was established that dentists who intended to qualify for the practice of the profession should undergo two series of exams. The first on Anatomy, Physiology, Histology and Hygiene and, the second, on Surgeries and Dental Prosthetics.

The work of Vicente Cândido Figueira de Sabóia, a doctor from Ceará, and Thomas G. dos Santos Filho, led the imperial government to officially create the Dentistry course at the Schools of Medicine in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro , through the edict 9.311, signed on October 25 th , 1884. From then on, the development of the modern Dentistry was greatly driven, with the improvement of teaching and technology. Three years earlier, Sabóia had imported equipment and tools from the United States to the School of Medicine of Rio Janeiro. The Law 3.141, of October 30 th , 1882 that created the Laboratory of Surgery and Dental Prosthetics at the university of Rio de Janeiro , was also the result of the work of Sabóia and Santos Filho.

In 1976, the Federal Board of Dentistry (Conselho Federal de Odontologia - CFO), through the resolution 96 dated of June 26 th , created the commemorative Surgeon Dentist's Day on October 25 th , due to the importance of the establishment of the Dentistry courses for the development of the profession.
