Restoring the memory

Preserving the memory of the Brazilian Dentistry is an increasing concern among the leaders of the entities' sector. A considerable number of ABOs already have their own museums set up, and others are taking action to start putting collections together. These are documents, pictures, equipment, tools, chairs and a large number of objects that help to restore or, at least, to register part of this science's fast evolution in the country.

According to a special bulletin published by the ABO/RJ, there are already 19 museums set up under the supervision of Dr. Thales Ribeiro de Magalhães including one of the oldest, the Salles da Cunha Museum, founded in 1928, that recently got new facilities at rua Barão de Sertório, 85.

There is also the Dentistry Library and Museum Institute of São Paulo (Imosp) inaugurated in 1956.

In Bahia, joined with the ABO/BA, the Dentistry Library and Museum Institute of Bahia (Imoba) has just been created and it is run by Lauriano Baqueiro Valencia . There are around 700 pieces donated by dentists and their family members, among which a chisel driver dated from 1790. The first pieces of furniture used at the ABO/BA's headquarters are also exhibited there.
