RESUMO

A ampla ação que os dentifrícios têm na promoção de saúde bucal de crianças, jovens, adultos e idosos é reflexo de sua formulação básica e dos agentes terapêuticos e cosméticos veiculados. Juntamente com a escova dental é o dispositivo mais usado mundialmente nos procedimentos de higiene bucal. Assim, os dentifrícios despertam interesse no mercado, pacientes e profissionais de saúde. O bom entendimento da formulação básica dos dentifrícios e das opções terapêuticas e cosméticas é essencial para o cirurgião-dentista envolvido com a orientação sobre saúde bucal dos seus pacientes.

ABSTRACT

Dentifrices have a broad action on the oral health of children, adolescents, adults and elderly due to their basic formulation and the incorporation of therapeutics and cosmetics agents. Together, dentifrices and toothbrushes, are the most common devices used in oral hygiene. For this reason, they are interesting for the manufacturers, patients and dentists. The knowledge about basic dentifrices formulation as well as their therapeutic choices is essential to dentistry involved with oral health education.
