FDI'2009
Brazil: 5 times successful in Singapore

Presidents Adolfo Rodriguez (Fola), Orlando Monteiro (OMD), Roberto Vianna (FDI) and Norberto Lubiana (ABO)

Cláudio Fernandes (1 st left) won the election to the Science Commission. Brazil has the largest delegation among the
134 countries of FDI

Thanks to ABO's international performance, Brazil has just taken over the presidency of FDI, with Roberto Vianna, besides two other important positions in the worldwide entity: in the Council, Norberto Lubiana was reelected, and Claudio Fernandes being elected for the Science Commission . Also with ABO's support Roberto Vianna's successor was elected. The President-elect Orlando Monteiro da Silva, president of the Portuguese dental association, OMD, will take office in the FDI Presidency in two years from now.

The positions were taken during the FDI'2009, held between the 2 nd and 5 th September, 2009, in Singapore , when the countdown to the FDI'2010 to be held in Salvador began .

Roberto Vianna in the Presidency - After two years of intense work as president-elect, the “carioca” dentist Roberto Vianna took office as FDI's President, he is also the international advisor to ABO National, the entity that was at the forefront of the campaign that culminated in 2007, during the FDI World Dental Congress in Dubai, in the election of the first Latin American to the highest position in the worldwide Dentistry. ABO's work has the recognition of the FDI's new president. "It's an honor and a pleasure to be in this position, but without ABO, Brazil could not reach this position. So I can say that it is an even greater honor to the entire ABO Network to have a Brazilian in such a position. I thank the leadership of Norberto Lubiana.”

Vianna was elected in 2007, with 122 votes - 69% of 177 voters, FDI delegates representing 134 member-countries from all regions of the world, equivalent to one million dentists. In Singapore , he received the FDI's traditional necklace from the hands of his predecessor, Burton Conrod ( Canada ).

Lubiana re-elected to the Council - The same worldwide recognition of the political strength of the Brazilian dentistry has led to the reelection of Lubiana to FDI's Council, with a massive support of all 21 countries that make up the Latin American Dental Federation (Fola). Lubiana occupies the position since 2006, when he was elected at the FDI World Dental Congress in Shenzhen , China .

Claudio Fernandes in the Science Commission - Another of the most coveted and contested jobs in FDI was also won by Brazil , with the election of the “carioca” dentist Cláudio Fernandes to the Science Commission of the entity. He is also the scientific coordinator to FDI' 2010, in Salvador ( Bahia ).

President-elect has ABO's support - In the coming years, the FDI will speak Portuguese as never before. Besides the three important positions at the entity, occupied by Brazilians, the Portuguese Orlando Monteiro da Silva, president of the Portuguese Dental Association (OMD) and candidate supported by ABO and by Fola, was chosen successor to the newly elected president of the Federation, Roberto Vianna.

From Singapore to Brazil - In Singapore , the countdown to the 2010 Annual Conference which will be held in Salvador (BA) began. The international prestige enjoyed by ABO was responsible for the unanimous choose of Dubai , United Arab Emirates , for the 2007 FDI World Dental Congress . The event should bring six thousand foreign dentists to Brazil - that, added to the Brazilians, will have the largest audience of events held by the Federation: more than 15 thousand participants. It was also in Singapore that the typical ceremony of handing over the official FDI flag to Brazil occurred. This ceremony of passing represents that up to September next year the country is the official headquarters of the World Dental Congress.

Global and local ABO - During FDI'2009, ABO was honored on several occasions for the launching of the Global Caries Initiative in the country, along with Rio Conference, during the 19 th CIORJ, last July. The fact that Brazil has hosted, in a FDI / ABO partnership, the first of a series of world conferences on the subject represents a milestone for the national dentistry.

And more and more foreigner dentists are turning themselves to the scientific and clinical practice of dentistry in Brazil . UniABO, the largest network of continuing dental education in the country, has welcomed professionals from many countries who are in search of qualified updating and exchange of knowledge. ABO / DF has three dentists in Mozambique among its students - one of them, attending a course at Taguatinga Regional. ABO/MS is dealing with Ecuador and Bolivia to provide more exchanges and further expand the visibility of Brazilian Dentistry, internationally.

International agreements - Besides all these achievements, over the past five years, ABO signed substantial international partnerships. An agreement with ADA allows all Brazilian dentists to participate in the Annual Dental Congress of the entity, or even to become members paying reduced fees . In the FDI, ABO began to contribute to all Brazilian dentists who also may participate in the congress at reduced fees . Other cooperation agreements have been signed with the Dental Association in Bulgaria, Korea and Portugal, and a collaborative work has being started for the creation of the Mozambique Association, a country that is also supported by ABO with continuing education, offering partial scholarships to help developing Mozambican Dentistry.

Goal accomplished - "This and other great achievements that ABO and, consequently, the Brazilian Dentistry have built internationally are the result of hard effort on behalf of oral health promotion without borders ," said Lubiana. To him, all these achievements reverberate in the world, the voice of more than 220 thousand dentists working in the country. "This is the result of four years of hard work , guided by the strategic plan developed by the National Executive Council (CEN) and the National Advisory Board (CDN ) of ABO, always valuing Brazilian dentists and the oral health promotion. A task that has required almost exclusive dedication to the defense of national dentistry, but that has put Brazil in an outstanding position in the world dentistry environment”, he celebrates.
