RESUMO

Introdução - A perda dos elementos dentários promove reabsorção óssea contínua do rebordo mandibular. O paciente desdentado total apresenta dificuldades no convívio social devido à falta de estabilidade das próteses totais muco-suportadas, principalmente em mandíbulas com reabsorção óssea severa. Neste artigo serão apresentadas as radiografias panorâmicas de três pacientes, antes e depois da instalação de cinco ou seis implantes na região interforaminal e a confecção de prótese total fixa implanto-suportada. Será discutido o crescimento ósseo em altura da região posterior da mandíbula e nas proximidades do forame mentoniano, além da alteração na densidade óssea mandibular, que provavelmente resultam do estímulo absorvido pelos implantes com aplicação de carga fisiológica.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Teeth loss results in continuous osseous resorption of the mandibular alveolar ridge. So, the edentulous patients present difficulties in social behaviour because of the lack of stability of total prosthesis, mainly in the mandibular arch due to severe bone loss. In this paper, panoramic radiographies of three patients will be presented, before and after the installation of five or six implants in the interforaminal area followed by the confection of implant-supported prosthesis. It will be discussed the bone growth in the posterior area of the mandible and near the mentual foramina as well as changes in bone density, that are probably consequent to the stimulus of physiologic application.
