RESUMO

Diante da não-obrigatoriedade legal do Cirurgião-dentista do Trabalho na equipe de Saúde Ocupacional do Serviço Especializado em Engenharia de Segurança e Medicina do Trabalho (SESMT), procurou-se pela literatura apresentada, esclarecer a colaboração que este profissional poderia acrescentar aos programas de atenção à saúde dos trabalhadores. Mostrou-se que nos espaços laborais os trabalhadores estão expostos a riscos ocupacionais físicos, químicos, biológicos e ergonômicos. Com base na legislação, identificou-se um campo de atuação deste profissional dentro do atual contexto da Saúde Ocupacional do Brasil, delimitando seu perfil na função de gestor do SESMT. Concluiu-se, entre outros, que a Odontologia do Trabalho deve zelar pela prevenção, promoção e manutenção da saúde bucal dos trabalhadores.

ABSTRACT

Despite not being mandatory the labor dentist to take part in the occupational health team of the Expertise Services in Safety Engineering and Labor Medicine (SESMT), there was a big effort through the revision studies presented by some authors to demonstrate the contribution that this type of worker could add to the Workers' Health Care Program. It has been pointed out by the authors that the workers are exposed by physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic occupational hazards at the workplaces. Based on an up to date legislation, it has identified an acting field for the labor dentist inside the pattern of occupational health in Brazil , restricting his professional profile whenever he is running the SESMT. Among other considerations, the author has got to the conclusion that the Labor Dentistry is responsible for the prevention, promotion and maintenance of worker's oral health.
